Scientists have evidence that the appearance of Homo sapiens and the appearance of magic occurred about the same time ?250,000 years ago. Anthropologists have discovered that thousands of years later, magic and superstition occurred in all cultures. This might make us assume that the human mind is wired to be superstitious. Recent studies in child psychology have taught us otherwise. We have found that 4-year-olds are not magical thinkers as we previously thought. Young children actually believe that the world is an orderly one. They expect that something that happens always has a cause even though they might not know what it is. It seems as if humans are actually hardwired to believe that events in our world have real causes, not magical ones. The question then becomes, how do adults end up believing the world contains mysterious agents of change? What moves us to become superstitious? It seems that our tendency to continually look for causes is a two-edged sword. The searching for causes does not mean we always find a cause that is true. For example, people used to believe that the appearance of a comet was 揷aused?by God because He was angry at certain people. Stuart Vyse is a psychology professor who is an authority on superstition, even though he prefers the term攎agical thinking.?He believes we become superstitious because of a process called 揳ccidental conditioning.?It happens because we become socialized by the culture in which we live. Once learned it is maintained by several human foibles called 揷ognitive biases.?Hence, we have the tendency to become more superstitious as we get older. Does this mean that religion is a superstition? Critics of religion say they are one and the same. After all, every religion is based on belief in the supernatural. However, many scientists believe that science and religion are separate parts of reality. The late Stephen Jay Gould believed that science and religion were separate; he called them 搊verlapping magisteria.?This does not mean that Christians are immune to religious superstition. For example, when the Enemy gets you to believe that you are a sorry example of a human being, your belief in your worthlessness is superstitious. It is based on a faulty notion of cause and effect, namely that you have done something that can make you worthless. God has said that nothing can separate us from his love. Since he has created us with infinite worth, we are not capable of doing anything that can take away this infinite worth. Not becoming a superstitious Christian is important. We need to be alert to catch the superstitions the Enemy throws at us.
