Sudongpo believed in Buddhism and he was possessed of great attainments in it. Once Buddhist apologetics was run between an abbot and him, both of whom were at zazen on pads. After a long time, the abbot asked:"What can I be in your eyes?" "You're a heap of bullshit in my eyes, man." answered Sudongpo. "You're yummy flower in my eyes." responded the abbot, with a scintilla of smile. Satisfactorily, Sudongpo went back and told his younger sister the thing.

"As Buddist maxim goes: mind in hell, evil ideas swell. Owing to the bullshit in your mind, you just look on others as bullshit."said his younger sister, whose words made Sudongpo utterly ashamed when heard by him.

Any ideas, whether benevolent or malevolent, have been actually primordial in mind before they are put into action. Those obsessed with evil ideas will get their judgement perverted while viewing others. Contrarily, those endued with benevolence and magnanimity will bring happiness to others and themselves。

It's certain that this theme caters to Miss Seclusive's interest. Miss Seclusive, acknowledging your Buddist attainments may be incomparable in this forum, I hope to get your instructions. Come on and do your stuff!

Buddism ---> Buddhism   Buddist ----> Buddhist

>> possess of: 拥有

a man of high attainments:

>> 辩经: debate on Buddhist doctrines

蒲团:sewn seat, (kapok-filled) zafu, meditation seat, (rush) cushion

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A zafu (座蒲 in Japanese or 蒲团 in Chinese) is a round cushion, about 35 cm (14 inches) in diameter, and often about 20 cm (8 inches) high, when fluffed. Although in U.S. English, zafu is often translated as "sewn seat", that is not the meaning of the Japanese kanji. "Za" (座) means "seat", and "fu" (蒲) means cattail. As a word, "zafu" means a seat made out of cattails. The origins of the Japanese zafu (座蒲) came from China where these meditation seats were originally made out of cattail. Today, that is no longer the case in Japan or China.

Contemporary Zafus are sewn from three pieces of heavy cloth, usually colored black: two round swatches of equal size for the top and the bottom of the cushion, and a long rectangle that is sewn into gathers in between. They are typically filled with either kapok or buckwheat hulls. Zen Buddhist practitioners traditionally sit on a zafu when engaged in sitting meditation. The cushion raises the hips, making the entire range of cross-legged sitting positions more stable for the meditator.

The zafu is both a utilitarian accessory and a symbol of zazen practice. Before and after sitting on the zafu, Zen practitioners perform a gassho bow to the cushion, to fellow practitioners, and to the teacher. In many practice places, there is a prescribed form for respectfully handling zafu while walking in the meditation hall, or zendo.

A zabuton (座布団) is a rectangular cushion, about 76 cm (30 inches) by 71 cm (28 inches), that is often used under a zafu cushion to provide comfort and support when engaged in sitting meditation. The outer cover is typically made of a heavy duty fabric and has a zipper along one side so that it can be easily removed and washed. Inside the cover, the batting is enclosed in a natural cotton casing.

possess

9. to impart to; inform; familiarize (often fol. by of or with): to possess someone of the facts of the case.

11. to make (someone) owner, holder, or master, as of property, information, etc.: He possessed them of the facts.

Sudongpo believed in Buddhism and he was possessed of great attainments in it. >>

从上面的意思来看 possess of 这个短语一般用为: possess sb. of sth.

变为被动态 则为: sb. be possessed of sth.

My version in simpler English:

As a follower of Buddhism, Su Dong-po was fairly learned in the doctrine. Once in a debate, he and the abbot of the temple, sitting on their cushions, had a lengthy exchange of arguments.
The abbot asked, “What am I in your eyes?”
“In my eyes you are a heap of bullshit, your honor”, Su said.
“Well, in my eyes you are a blooming flower,” replied the abbot, with a smile.
Su went home with satisfaction, and told this to his younger sister.
She commented, “Buddhists believe that one's mind falls in hell because of none other but evil thoughts. You see others as bullshit simply because in your mind there is bullshit.” Su then felt ashamed of himself.
Any thought, good or evil, is already in the mind before it is put into practice or becomes a fact. Those who are filled with evil thoughts would look at others with distorted eyes, while those who are filled with friendship and tolerance would bring about happiness to others, and to themselves as well.

bullshit: "eloquent and insincere rhetoric," 1915, Amer.Eng. slang. Bull in the sense of "trivial or false statements" (1914) is usually associated with this, but it existed since M.E. in the sense of "false talk, fraud," apparently from O.Fr. boul, and perhaps connected to modern Icel. bull "nonsense." There also was a verb bull meaning "to mock, cheat," which dates from 1532.

a heap of bullshit

试译为:a pile of (fresh) cow dung

参见:http://www.hikz.com/surf.php?url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cow_dung

Cow dung is a term used for the feces of the bovine species. The species includes the cow, buffalo, ox and bullock. Cow dung is basically the digested residue of herbivorous matter which is acted upon by symbiotic bacteria residing within the animal's rumen. The resultant faecal matter is rich in minerals. Colour ranges from greenish to blackish. In due course, the resulting matter turns yellow due to chemical changes caused by sunlight.

a Buddhist maxim: 一句佛偈

“佛家有言”也可表示为:according to Buddhist teachings/ doctrines

Your evil thoughts give rise to your hell.

You look on others as cow dung simply because it just reflects on you.
